Gyeongbokgung
Summary
- Worked as main palace of royal family in first half of Joseon history.
- Meaning of Gyeongbokgung : “Palace greatly blessed by Heaven” named by Dojeon Jung (Chief Scholar of King Taejo) based on the book of song.
The Tumultuous History of Gyeongbokgung
- Built in 1395 (3 years later after the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. 1 years of construction period from 1394)
- After only 4 years later from 1399 to 1425, it was abandoned because of capital change, reluctance of King Taejong, etc.
- It had been used as royal main palace from King Sejong in 1425.
- Completely burned down during Imjin war(1592) by Japanese army or by Joseon people (controversial topic)
- Abandoned until King Gojong’s restoration in 1867.
- After Ulmi Japaneses assassination(1895), King Gojong escaped to Russian Legation, then moved to Deoksugung (Kyeongungung). Finally, it was abandoned completely and no kings returned to Kyeongbokgung.
- It had gone through serious demolition and damage during Japanese occupation. Japanese colonial government built its official building inside Kyeongbokgung and demolished the most buildings inside in 1916.
- It had been remained in ruins until president Kim Youngsam decide the restoration of Kyeongbokgung and dismantle of Japanese Government general building in 1993.
- Restoration project is still on going to target to finish until 2045.
